Abstract:

The personality and behavior of an individual, as a social being, determine how they are perceived within society. It is an undeniable fact that the dark triad personality traits, known as the dark side of personality, have been present in society in recent years. This study aims to evaluate the manipulation skills in interpersonal relationships of individuals with dark triad personality traits. The sample group of the study consists of 1003 individuals residing in Istanbul. Participants were administered self-report measures online, including the “Demographic Information Form,” the “Dark Triad Personality Scale,” and the “Interpersonal Manipulation Scale.” Correlation analysis and independent t-tests were used to analyze the data. A significant difference was found in the mean total scores on the Dark Triad Personality Scale based on the gender of the participants. Additionally, a significant difference was found in the mean scores on the Victim Selection subscale of the Interpersonal Manipulation Scale based on the gender of the participants. A moderately significant positive relationship was found between dark triad personality scores and manipulation, aggressive manipulation, emotional manipulation, victim selection, self-concealment, and strategy scores in interpersonal relationships. The results of the study suggest that manipulative skills may contribute to the development of dark triad personality traits. Conducting studies with different sample groups is expected to contribute to the literature.
