Examination of Coronavirus Anxiety in terms of Sociodemographic Variables in COPD Population

Abstract:

This cross-sectional study investigated the concerns of the COPD population towards the Covid-19 pandemic and their adaptation to changes in healthcare delivery. The study population consists of 100 patients who have been followed up with a diagnosis of COPD for at least one year. Patients answered questions about their demographic characteristics, smoking, COPD attacks, drug use, and hospital admissions. Pandemic concerns were evaluated with the newly introduced Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS) in the literature.  In the patient population; 64% were in the geriatric age group, 80% were married, 92% had regular income, and the ratio of men and women was equal. In the study, no significant difference was found in the level of coronavirus anxiety according to gender, age, marital status, education level, income level, and cohabitants (p>0.05). No significant difference was found in the level of coronavirus anxiety according to smoking and medication use, number of COPD attacks, number of hospitalisations, relationship with Covid-19 and health service receipt status of patients diagnosed with COPD (p>0.05). It is thought that the fact that the cases developed attack prevention skills over the years due to having a chronic disease helped them to manage their anxiety about the coronavirus. Approximately half of the patients avoided hospital admission to receive healthcare services during the pandemic and used the alternative of receiving healthcare services by telephone. With tele-medicine applications to be designed in detail in health policies, hospitalisations can be reduced and disease management can be facilitated.
