Abstract:

Bodybuilding has many features associated with masculinity such as muscular appearance, strength, performance and endurance. The aim of this study is to psychically evaluate how men construct masculinity through their bodies, which they reconstruct by bodybuilding, their body images and narcissistic personality structures and pre-Oedipal father designs. The research was carried out with male subjects who have been actively involved in bodybuilding since adolescence in the TRNC, who voluntarily agreed to participate in the study. Rorschach and TAT were applied to the cases participating in the study after in-depth stories were taken with the semi-structured interview form created by the researcher. The findings of the study suggest that the subjects’ inadequacy in perceiving the test material in its entirety and their deficiencies regarding self-images. It can be counted among the main findings that the identification of the cases is immature and defensive, and they cannot cope with separation anxiety. It is among the main findings that the cases could not establish the oedipal triangle and had difficulty in establishing a relationship between men and women. As a result, when the responses of both bodybuilder male subjects to Rorschach and TAT were examined, their identification was childish and defensive, It is noteworthy that they defined the mother as a person who oppresses and controls. It is thought that to involve female bodybuilders in the sample in similar studies in the future can reveal what it means for bodybuilders to build a new body, as well as their perceptions about their bodies.
