Abstract:
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the mediator role of positive-negative affect in relationship between gender roles and relationship satisfaction. The sample is composed of 214 university students in a romantic relationship. 117 (54.7%) of the participants were female and 97 (45.3%) were male. In the present study, the gender roles perceived by the participants for their partners were also learned. The variables of the study were measured with Demographic Information Form, BEM Gender Role Short Inventory, Positive- Negative Affect Scale and Relationship Assessment Scale. The collected data were analysed using the SPSS package program. In order to analyse the data, the relationships between the variables of the study were examined primarily by Pearson Moment Product Correlation. Then, the mediating role of positive and negative affect in the relationship between gender role and relationship satisfaction was examined. The results demonstrated that negative affect partially mediates the relationship between one’s own femininity level (BEM-A Femininity) and relationship satisfaction. In the same way, negative affect partially mediates the relationship between one’s partner’s femininity level (BEM-B Femininity) and relationship satisfaction. Finally, it was concluded that positive affect completely mediates the relationship between one’s own masculinity (BEM-A Masculinity) and relationship satisfaction. The results were discussed depending on the relevant literature.
